GRE (Graduate Record Examination)
What is GRE?
The GRE is a standardized test required for admission into graduate schools (Master’s and Ph.D. programs), especially in the USA, Canada, and some European and Asian universities.
Sections
- Analytical Writing (2 essays – “Issue” & “Argument”)
- Verbal Reasoning (reading comprehension, text completion, vocabulary)
- Quantitative Reasoning (arithmetic, algebra, geometry, data analysis)
Format & Duration
- Computer-delivered GRE General Test: ~1 hour 58 minutes (shortened format since 2023).
- Paper-based GRE is rare and only available in some regions.
Scoring
- Verbal Reasoning: 130–170 (1-point increments)
- Quantitative Reasoning: 130–170 (1-point increments)
- Analytical Writing: 0–6 (half-point increments)
- Total possible range: 260–340 + writing score.
Recognition
- Required for many graduate programs (STEM, business, social sciences, humanities).
- Some MBA programs accept GRE instead of GMAT.
- Widely recognized in USA, Canada, Europe, Australia, and Asia.
